Q

What was the result of the War of 1812?

A

Despite many defeats for the U.S., the War of 1812 ended in a draw and the Treaty of Ghent was signed to return the conquered territory and the country to its pre-war state. Although it wasn’t a complete win, it wasn’t a loss either and the U.S. was able to prove its military capabilities which ushered in the Era of Good Feelings. The boost in patriotism led to a growth in the belief of American expansionism which influenced the rest of the 19th century.

It also marked the end of the Federalist Party for being viewed as unpatriotic with its antiwar belief and contemplation of secession in the Hartford Convention.

Lastly, the war showed that a national bank was needed since the U.S. lacked a reliable source to raise funds and that the country’s infrastructure and transportation were weak because of the difficulties with transporting soldiers and materials.

Q

What was the Annexation of Texas?

A

Annexed in 1845 by President James K. Polk, Texas became the 28th state. Texas used to be part of Mexico until 1836 but American settlers declared independence for the new Republic of Texas, and eventually Texas was admitted as a slave state. This ended up adding to tensions building up to the Mexican American War (1846-1848)

Q

What was the Missouri Compromise of 1820?

A

The Missouri Compromise allowed Maine to be admitted as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. It also prohibited slavery in the area north of the 36-degree 30’ parallel in the remaining territory from the Louisiana Purchase.

The North and South were increasingly concerned about the balance of free and slave state power in the Senate. This compromise helped continue the 50/50 split.
