A word in a sentence that names a person, place, thing, quality, idea, or action
Noun
A word that substitutes a noun, the word the noun is substituting must be previously referenced or understood before using
Pronoun
A word that expresses an action or a state of being, can also be actions that are perceived or sensed
Verb
A modifier to a noun. It answers the question which one, what kind, or how many of the now that it is modifying
Adjective
A modifier to a verb, and adjective, or another adverb. It answers the question how, when, where, or how much of the verb, adjective, or other verb it is modifying
Adverb
The person, place, thing, or idea that the sentence is about
Subject
The part of the sentence that contains the verb or verb phrase
Predicate
A noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb
Direct object
A person or thing that the verb is done for or directed to
Indirect object
A sentence that has two ideas must be grammatically matched. Noun must be matched with noun, verb with verb, phrase with phrase, and clause with clause
Parallel construction
The name of a particular person, place, or thing. Should be capitalized
Proper noun
Indicates the person who is speaking or writing
First person
Indicates the person spoken or written to
Second person
Refers to the person or thing spoken or written about
Third person
The noun to which the pronoun in the sentence refers
