What is the quaternary sector?
The quaternary sector or the knowledge based sector of the economy is worth over 30 billion pounds to the UK.
What’s the percentage of the working population that work in the quaternary sector?
10 - 15%
What fields come under the quaternary sector?
> Research and development (scientific) - chemical engineering - new polymers, biomedical - new medicines, software development.
Creative industries - music composers/writers, artists- NOT SINGERS, film/media/movie creators and directors - production NOT ACTORS, architect - designing buildings
Education - university lectures who also carry out research for their lectures.
The growth of the quaternary sector has been driven by two main factors which are?
- Firms investing in larger research departments to help develop new products more quickly for saturated markets - constant innovation in mobile technology (updates)
- The expansion of universities and higher education has also been a major influence, driven by government recognition that a high-skilled workforce is vital for the UK’s continuing success.
