Due to the poor infrastructure - they are an LEDC so you would expect that

3.5 million - Due to the buildings being of a poor quality, there was hardly any infrastructure remaining
What else was also destroyed as a result of the earthquake?
Hospitals, which meant the injured were left waiting for relief aid - Farmland was also destroyed being no subsistence crops after the earthquake
Why were they so underprepared even though they are a country prone to earthquakes?
Because they are an LEDC so they money the government does have is proritised in making sure people have water, food and medical access.
