Energy Security - Key Terms Flashcards
Energy Security
To have access to reliable and affordable energy sources
Non-Renewable Energy/ Finite Energy
A non-renewable resource is a resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced e.g. fossil fuels
Fossil Fuels
A natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms
Resource Depletion
Is the consumption of resource faster than it can be replenished
Renewable Energy
Energy from a source that is not depleted when used e.g. wind or solar power
Flow Resources
Renewables which do not need regeneration as these resources are in constant supply (recyclable energy)
Energy Mix
A country using the energy available to it in different proportions. How much % of one and how much % of the other
Energy Poverty
Lack of access to energy resources in the developing world
Energy Pathways
The flows of energy from producer to consumer, pathways take the form of gas and oil pipelines
Geopolitics
Is the study of the ways in which political decisions and processes affect the way resources and space are used. It’s the combination of geography, economics and politics
OPEC
Organisation of the petroleum exporting countries
Upstream
Oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the searching for and the recovery and production of crude oil and natural gas
Midstream Industry
Processes, stores, markets and transports commodities such as crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids and sulpher
Downstream
Oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the refining of crude oil and the selling and distribution of natural gas and products derived from crude oil
Production Hotspot
This is an energy producing country or region where there is political instability
