Unit 3.3 Memory Flashcards
What is encoding?
The conversion of one or more nerve impulses into a form that can be received and held in the brain and retrieved later
What is the definition of memory?
Memory is the ability to store information, retain it and retrieve it when needed.
What is chunking?
Chunking is the grouping of information into one large unit made of smaller units. This increases memory span and makes things easier to remember
What is the working memory?
Working memory is an extension of the STM that processes some data and allows simple cognitive tasks
What is displacement?
Term given for the loss of items from the STM due to its limited capacity
What is rehearsal?
- rehearsal involves repeating something over and over
- process extends the length of time info is held in STM
- Shallow encoding
What is organisation?
- involves grouping items into related groups to inc chance of being successfully transferred from STM to LTM
- Organised groups have contextual cues
What is the elaboration of meaning?
Memory transfer method where additional meaning or detail is added about the item to be remembered
What are contextual cues?
Signals or reminders which relate to the conditions or circumstances that were present when the information was transferred to the LTM. Helps aid recall
