Unit 1.3 The Worst Unit Ever. Flashcards
What is transcription?
The synthesis of mRNA from a section of DNA
What is translation?
The synthesis of a polypeptide chain using the sequence of bases on the mRNA
What is mRNA and what does it do?
mRNA is transcribed from the appropriate section of the DNA strand and carries a complimentary copy of the DNA code from the nucleus to be translated into proteins by ribosomes in the cytoplasm
What is rRNA and what is does it do?
Ribosomal RNA combines with proteins to form the ribosome
What is tRNA and what does it do?
Transfer RNA; each tRNA carries a specific amino acid to the ribosome to build a protein
What is the triplet of bases on tRNA called?
Anti-codon
What is mRNA splicing?
Removal of introns and joining of exons to form a mature transcript
What is a codon?
A triplet of bases on mRNA
