Unit 3.1 Divisions Of The Nervous System And Neural Pathways Flashcards
What effect does the sympathetic nervous system have on the heart?
It increases the rate and force of cardiac muscle contraction (increasing heart rate)
What effect does the sympathetic nervous system have on bronchioles?
The smooth muscle in wall of bronchiole becomes relaxed resulting in an increased breathing rate and depth of breathing
What effect does the sympathetic nervous system have on the digestive tract?
Decreased rate of contraction of smooth muscle in the wall of the digestive tract resulting in decreased rate of peristalsis
What effect does the sympathtic nervous system have on the intestine?
Activity of secretory glands in intestine wall is inhibited resulting in a decreased rate of intestinal secretions
What does the somatic nervous system contain?
Sensory and motor neurons
What effect does the parasympathtic nervous system have on the heart?
It decreases the rate and force of cardiac muscle contraction, resulting in decreased heart rate
What effect does the parasympathtic nervous system have on the bronchioles?
The smooth muscle in bronchiole wall becomes contracted, resulting in decreased depth of breathing and breathing rate
What effect does the parasympathtic nervous system have on the digestive tract?
Increases rate of contraction in wall of digestive tract resulting in increased rate of perstalsis
What effect does the parasympathtic nervous system have on the intestine?
Activity of secretory glands in intestinal wall is stimulated resulting in increased production of intestinal secretions
What is a converging neural pathway?
Impulses from several neurons travelling to one neuron
What is a diverging neural pathway?
Impulses from one neruon travelling to several neurons
What is a reverberating neural pathway?
Neural pathway where later neurons link back to earlier ones in the pathway, sending impulses back through the pathway
