Unit 1.6 Metabolic Pathways Flashcards
What is metabolism?
The biochemical processes which occur within an organism in order to keep it alive
What is a catabolic pathway?
Reactions that involve the breakdown of larger molecules into smaller molecules, usually releasing energy
What is an Anabolic pathway?
Reactions that require energy to build smaller molecules into larger more complex molecules
What is induced fit?
The active site is flexible and changed very slightly when the substrate molecule enters allowing it to fit very closely around the substrate molecule
Competitive inhibitors are affected by:
Inhibitor concentration and substrate concentration
Non competitive inhibitors are affected by:
Inhibitor concentration only
How can the action of a competitive inhibitor be reversed?
Increasing substrate concentration
What is a competitive inhibitor?
A substance which decreases the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction by occupying the active site
What is a non-competitive inhibitor?
A substance which decreases the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction by occupying a site other than the active site
What is end-product inhibition?
A method of controlling metabolic pathways that works by negative feedback if intermediates and end products
