What are the two types of nervous system?
The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
What makes up the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
What makes up the peripheral nervous system?
The somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system
What does the somatic nervous system contain?
Sensory and motor neurons
What does sensory neurones do?
Take impulses from sense organs to the central nervous system
What do motor neurons do?
Take impulses from the central nervous system to muscles and glands
What does the autonomic nervous system consist of?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
The systems are said to be antagonistic but what does that mean?
The affect the same structure but have opposite effect on them
Which system is involved in flight or fight?
Sympathetic nervous system
What system is involved in rest and digest?
Parasympathetic nervous system
What do sympathetic and parasympathetic systems do?
Sympathetic system speeds up heart rate and breathing rate and slows down peristalsis and production of intestinal secretions
Parasympathetic system slows down heart rate and breathing rate and speeds up peristalsis and production of intestinal secretions
What is the definition of a converging neural pathway?
Several neurons sending an impulse to one neuron
This increases the sensitivity to excitatory or inhibitory signals
What happens in a diverging neural pathway?
Impulses from one neuron travelled to several neurons so affecting are more than one destination at the same time
What happens in a reverberating pathway?
When neurons later in the past we link with the earlier neurons sending the impulse back for the pathway that allows repeated stimulation of the pathway
