what is a monoculture?
when only one species of crop is grown in a large area of land
what are downsides of a monoculture?
they provide optimal conditions for weeds, pests and disease-causing microbes to thrive
what resources do plants growing in a similar area compete for?
Light
Water
Soil nutrients
Space
how can competition in a monoculture be reduced?
by evenly spacing the plants
what is an annual weed?
weeds that only live for a year, they grow quickly, have short lifecycles and produce a high number of seeds that remain dormant but viable for long periods
what is a perreneal weed?
plants that come back year after year, they are already established on the land, have storage organs for food and can reproduce vegetatively
what is an invertabrate pest?
Nematode worms, Molluscs, Insect
