Unit 1 Topic 1- Structure Of DNA Flashcards
What unit is DNA comprised of?
Neuclotides
What do neuclotides consist of?
A phosphate, a deoxyribose sugar and a base
What a sugar-phosphate backbone?
The bonds between one phosphate and the deoxyribose sugar of another
What are bases held together by?
A weak hydrogen bond
What is a eukaryote?
Usually multicellular organisms, they have a nucleus and contain membrane bound organisms. For example yeast, plant and animal cells
What is a prokaryote?
Single cell organisms with no neucleus and contain circular chromosomes. For example bacteria
What is the protein that DNA is wrapped around when it is arranged into chromosome to ensure it doesn’t tangle?
Hystone
Where are the circular chromosomes held in eukaryotic cells?
Mitochondria and chloroplasts
