Unit 2 Topic 4- Metabolism In Conformers And Regulators Flashcards
what is a conformer?
an organism which is dependent on the changes in the external environment
what is a regulator?
an organism which can control their internal environment regardless of external environmental change
what is homeostasis?
the maintainance of a constant internal environment
what is negative feedback control?
if the internal environment changes from the usual levels the change is detected by receptors, the receptors then send signals to the brain to send nerve impulses/ hormones to effectors. the effectors bring about a corrective response to return internal conditions to their normal level
what is thermoregulation?
the regulation of body temperature
what are the reasons thermoregulation is important?
to maintain optimal enzyme activity
to maintain high diffusion rates
what is the temperature monitoring centre of the brain?
the hypothalamus
what role does skin have in regulating temperature?
hairs rising or falling to trap air, sweating
