8
Q

what animals don’t need a circulatory system and why?

A

very small animals such as flatworms, because they can obtain the substances they need through diffusion

9
Q

why cant larger animals just use diffusion to obtain the substances they need?

A

because they have a smaller surface area to volume ratio so substances couldn’t diffuse fast enough to support their metabolism

Q

what does the animal transport system consist of?

A

a fluid medium used to transport substances to and from cells such as blood
a pump to flush the fluid around the body
specilslised exchange surfaces

Q

what is different about a single circulatory system ?

A

the heart only has 2 chambers, a ventricle and an atrium and blood only flows through the heart once in each complete circuit

15
Q

what is different about an incomplete double circulatory system?

A

the heart has 3 chambers, 2 atria and one ventricle, the atria recieve blood from 2 different circuits. there is some mixing of blood which makes the system inefficient.

Q

what animals have a complete double circulatory system?

A

birds and mammals

17
Q

what is different about a double circulatory system?

A

the heart has four chambers, 2 ventricles and 2 atria, it is a double loop meaning that blood flows through it twice in a complete loop. there is no mixing of the blood making it an efficient system.

18
Q

where does the right ventricle pump blood to?

A

the lungs

19
Q

where does the left ventricle pump blood to?

A

the body

20
Q

do fish have a high or low metabolic rate?

A

low

21
Q

do amphibians and reptiles have a high or low metabolic rate?

A

low

22
Q

do birds and mammals have a high or low metabolic rate?

A

high
