Unit 2 Topic 2- Cellular Respiration Flashcards
what is phosphorylation?
an enzyme controlled process in which a phosphate group is added ( eg. ADP + Pi turns into ATP
what are the 3 stages of cellular respiration?
glycolosys
citric acid cycle
electron transport chain
Where does glycolysis take place?
The cytoplasm
Is glycolysis an aerobic or anaerobic stage?
Anaerobic
What are the two stages of glycolysis?
Energy investment and energy pay off
What happens in the glycolysis stage?
Glucose
V. ATP>ADP+Pi
Intermediate 1
V ATP>ADP+Pi
Intermediate 2
H NAD>NADH V. 4ADP+Pi> 4ATP
2x pyruvate
How many ATP are gained from glycolysis?
2
Where does the citric acid cycle take place?
The central matrix of the mitrocondrion
What happens in the citric acid cycle?
Pyruvate is broken down by enzymes into an Acetyl group. The Acetyl group combined with Coenzyme A forming Acetyl CoA. This is an enzyme controlled process so it involves dehydrogenases.
Is the citric acid cycle an aerobic or anaerobic stage?
Aerobic
Is CO2 released in the citric acid cycle?
Yes
What does NAD/NADH do in the citric acid cycle?
Transports electrons and hydrogen ions to the electron transport chain
Where does the electron transport chain take place?
Inner membrane of the mitrocondria
What is the Electron Transport Chain?
A collection of carrier proteins attached to the inner membrane
What does NADH do to the ETC?
Releases electrons to it
