Unit 2 Topic 6- Environmental Control Of Metabolism Flashcards
what are the two types of microorganism?
prokaryotes and eukaryotes
what are examples of prokaryotes?
bacteria and archaea
what are examples of eukaryotes?
animals, fungi and plants
why are microorganisms used in research and industry?
they grow quickly are easy to culture and they are adaptable
what are aseptic tequniques and why are they important?
sterile conditions, this is important to prevent contamination, to reduce competition for nutrients
what are the stages of microbial growth?
lag,exponential,stationary, death
what is the lag phase?
the first phase, there is little to no increase in cell number here as enzymes which can metabolise available substrates are only beginning to be introduced
what is the exponential phase?
the second phase, in this phase cell growth reaches its maximum rate as nutrients are most plentiful, cell population doubles each cell division
what is the stationary phase?
the third phase, here the rate of production of new cells slows to the same as the rate of cell death so cell production stays still. nutrients begin to run out and toxic metabolites build up
