- ability to focus in on a certain stimuli (current conversation) in a room full of stimuli (all other stimuli)
- if someone across the room says our name we will still shift our attention to that

A
the failure to perceive/notice certain stimuli

inattentional blindness
A
not seeing something in our visual field bc our attention is focused on something else
- not seeing a gorilla walk across the screen bc focused on counting how many times a kid jumps

A
not noticing a change in a scene bc of an interruption in seeing
- not noticing a planes engine appearing and disappearing between flashes that interrupt our vision
