Our ancestors slept because it was safer for them to be in caves when it was dark out
Recuperation

- Sleep gives time for our immune system and brain tissues to be repaired
- Neurons take this time to fix themselves as well
Memory Storage

We sleep so that our memories can be moved from the hippocampus to long term storage and so the brain can process information taken in during the day

- problem solving
- breakthroughs

Pituitary Gland releases growth hormones while we sleep
How do sleep cycles differ between young and old adults?
young- cycle through all cycles every 90 min
old- shorter and more frequent cycles, more wakings, less REM, less NREM-3
How do the stages of sleep change as night goes on?
- REM and NREM-2 increase
- NREM-3 decreases and eventually stops
