unit 3; structure of human gas exchange system Flashcards
describe the lungs
pair of lobed structures made up of highly branches tubes called bronchioles which end in tiny air sacks called alveoli
describe the trachea
flexible airway supported by rings of cartilage that prevent collapse, made of muscle, lined with ciliated epithelium and goblet cells
describe the bronchi
two divisions of the trachea, produce mucus to trap dirt particles and move mucus to the throat on cilia, large bronchi still supported by cartilage
describe the bronchioles
branching subdivisions of bronchi, walls made up of muscle lined with epithelial cells, muscle allows them to constrict and control the flow of air
describe the alveoli
air sacs at the ends of bronchioles, diameter of 100-300 micrometers, collagen and elastic fiber’s between alveoli, alveoli lined with epithelium- they are the gas exchange surface
