unit 3; cardiac cycle Flashcards
what is systole
the contraction of the heart muscles
what is diastole
relaxation of the heart muscles
what happens during diastole
atria are relaxed and fill with blood, ventricles are also relaxed
what happens during atrial systole
atria contract, pushing blood into ventricles, ventricles remain relaxed
what happens during ventricular systole
atria relax, ventricles contract, blood is pushed through pulmonary arteries and aorta
describe atrioventricular valves
between atriums and ventricles- prevents backflow of blood
describe semi-lunar valves
in aorta and pulmonary artery, prevent backflow into ventricles
describe pocket valves
in veins, ensures blood flow back towards the heart not away from it
what is the equation for cardiac output
heart rate X stroke volume (volume of blood pumped out with each beat)
