dna replication Flashcards
what are the 4 requirements for semi conservative replication to take place
the 4 nucleotides with their base pairs must be present, both strands of the DNA molecule acing as a template for the attachment of the nucleotides, DNA polymerase, a source of chemical energy to drive the process
what are the 4 nucleotides
adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine
what is stage 1
helicase enzymes separate the 2 DNA strands
what is the point at which the 2 strands are separated called
the replication fork
what is stage 2
each strand of the DNA molecule is kept apart during replication by single strand binding proteins
what is stage 3
the formation of new strands are catalysed by DNA polymerase
how does DNA polymerase form new strands of the DNA molecule
it uses each parent strand as a template, ‘reading’ the sequence of bases and adding complementary bases to form new strands
what is stage 4
DNA polymerase reads the parent strand in a 3’-5’ direction and builds the leading strand in a 5’-3’ direction towards the replication fork
