unit 3; blood vessels and their functions Flashcards
function of arteries
carries blood away from the heart and into arterioles
function of arterioles
control blood flow from arteries to capillaries
function of capillaries
link arterioles to veins
function of veins
carry blood from capillaries to heart6
what is the outside layer of the blood vessels
tough fibrous outer layer
what is the second layer of the blood vessels
muscle layer
what is the 3rd layer of the blood vessels
elastic layer
what is the 4th layer of the blood vessels
thin inner lining (endothelium)
what is the last layer of the blood vessels
lumen- central cavity (not a layer)
what is tissue fluid
watery liquid, contains glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, ions and oxygen
function of tissue fluid
provides tissues with said substances, takes away waste products such as carbon dioxide
how does tissue fluid return to the circulatory system
low hydrostatic pressure in the capillaries forces it in, and water leaves the tissue by osmosis
how are the contents of the lymphatic system moved
hydrostatic pressure of tissue fluid outside the capillaries, contraction of body muscles- valves ensure correct direction of flow
