Unit 3- Nervous system and pathways Flashcards
What are the 2 types of nervous system?
CNS, peripheral nervous system
What is the CNS?
Brain, Spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system?
It’s made up of all other neurons from the rest of the body.
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of?
Somatic nervous system, autonomic nervous system.
What is the somatic nervous system?
Controls the skeletal muscles and contains motor and sensory neurons.
What do sensory neurons do in the somatic nervous system?
Take impulses from sensory organs to the CNS.
What do motor neurons do in the somatic nervous system?
Take impulses from the CNS to muscle and glands.
What does the autonomic nervous system consist of?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and are antagonistic (act in opposite ways).
What does the sympathetic system do?
Speeds up heart rate and breathing rate. Slows down peristalsis and production of intestinal secretion.
What does the parasympathetic system do?
Slows down heart rate and breathing rate. Speeds up peristalsis and production of intestinal secretions.
What are the three types of neural pathways?
Diverging, converging, reverberating.
What is a converging neural pathway?
Impulses from several neurons travel to one neuron, increasing sensitivity to excitatory or inhibitory signals.
What is a diverging neural pathway?
Impulses from one neuron travel to several neurons affecting more than one destination at a time.
What is a reverberating (echo) neural pathway?
When neurons later in the pathway link with earlier neurons sending the impulses back, allowing repeated stimulation of the pathway.
