Unit 3- Memory Flashcards
What are memories?
Memories include past experiences, knowledge and thoughts.
What does memory involve?
Encoding ,storage and retrieval of information. ESR
What is encoding?
Encoding is transferring information into memory.
What are the 3 types of memory?
Sensory, short term and long term.
What does sensory memory do?
Holds information for a few seconds. Only selected images (visual input) and sounds (auditory input) are encoded into short term memory.
Describe short term memory (STM)
It has a limited capacity and holds information for a short time. Information is retained by rehearsal and lost by displacement.
Describe long term memory (LTM)
Has unlimited capacity and holds information for a long time. Information is transferred from STM to LTM by rehearsal, organisation and elaboration.
Define rehearsal
The repeating of information.
Define organisation.
Putting information into related groups.
Define elaboration.
Adding meaning to information.
Compare rehearsal to elaboration.
Rehearsal is a shallow form of encoding whereas elaborating is a deeper form of encoding into the LTM.
What are contextual cues?
They help the retrieval of information from LTM. They relate to the time/place where the information was encoded (where the memory was created).
