Unit 2- Blood Glucose Flashcards
Describe glucose concentrations during exercise.
Glucose concentrations are raised by adrenaline.
Describe how chromic elevation of the glucose levels affects blood vessels.
Elevation of blood glucose levels leads to endothelium cells taking in more glucoses than normal, damaging blood vessels.
Describe type 1 diabetes.
Occurs in childhood. Unable to produce insulin and is treated by regular doses of insulin.
Describe type 2 diabetes
Develops later in life possibly due to being overweight. They produce insulin but their cells are less sensitive to it.
Describe the glucose tolerance test.
- The blood glucose concentrations of the individual are measured after fasting.
- The individual then drinks a glucose solution and changes in their blood glucose concentration are measured for the next 2 hours.
How do you calculate BMI?
BMI = weight in kilograms / height in metres (squared)
What BMI suggests obesity?
BMI > 30
Why should the diet limit fats and free sugars?
Fats have a high calorific value, and free sugars require no metabolic energy.
How does exercise reduce risk of CVD?
Exercise increases energy expenditure and preserves lean muscle tissue.
