Unit 3 List 3 DNA & Heredity AKT Flashcards
the process by which a parent cell divides into two daughter cells
cellular division
the female reproductive cell, or gamete, in most anisogamous organisms
egg cell
the study of heritable traits, or a stable change of cell function, that happen without changes to the DNA sequence
epigenetic
the action or process of fertilizing an egg, female animal, or plant, involving the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote
fertilization
a particular genetically determined characteristic or quality that distinguishes somebody
inherited traits
an organism that consists of more than one cell
multicellular organism
a type of reproduction that involves a complex life cycle in which a gamete with a single set of chromosomes combines with another gamete to produce a zygote that develops into an organism composed of cells with two sets of chromosomes
sexual reproduction
the male reproductive cell, or gamete, in anisogamous forms of sexual reproduction
sperm cell
the gene in question is located on one of the numbered, or non-sex, chromosomes
autosomal
a condition wherein the dominant allele completely masks the effect of the recessive allele
complete dominance
the generation of hybrids produced from a cross between the genetically different individuals called parents
F1 (first filial)
consists of the offsprings of the F1 generation
F2 (second filial)
The complete set of DNA (genetic material) in an organism
genome
a mating experiment between two organisms that are identically hybrid for two traits
dihybrid cross
the proportional relationship between different genotypes that result from a genetic cross
genotypic ratio
genetic variation in a population will remain constant from one generation to the next
Hardy-Weinberg Conditions
the genetic variation in a population will remain constant from one generation to the next in the absence of disturbing factors
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium
a form of Gene interaction in which both alleles of a gene at a locus are partially expressed, often resulting in an intermediate or different phenotype
incomplete dominance
a cross between two organisms with different variations at one genetic locus of interest
monohybrid cross
the original pair of parents at the start of a genetic cross experiment
P (parental) generation
a ratio comparing the possible outcomes for an organism based on physical appearance
phenotypic ratio
the inheritance of a trait governed by more than one genes
polygenic inheritance
the whole number of inhabitants occupying an area
population
a numerical comparison of how many offspring will have one phenotype versus another
ratio
any difference between cells, individual organisms, or groups of organisms
variation
the genetic constitution of an individual organism.
genotype
the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
