Unit 1 Exp Design AKT Flashcards
Testable question
Questions that can be answered through experimentation and observation
Non-testable question
Questions that cannot be answered through observation / evidence gathered through experimental testing
Quantitative
Data that has to do with numbers
Qualitative
Data that has to do with the five senses; is based more on opinions
Trials
Tests conducted in an experiment
Observation
Observing something to draw hypotheses, data, and conclusions
Empirical evidence
Information obtained through observation and documentation of a specific behavior and patterns throughout an experiment
Data
The results of trials
Model is science
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of ideas, events, or processes
Analogy
Using something to compare to something else
Prototype
A test build, usually not the final product
Hypothesis
An educated guess based on observation
Variable
An element, number, feature, or factor that can be changed and/or varied
Procedure
The steps taken throughout the scientific process / experiment
Precision
How close the measurements are to each other (ex. you shoot some darts and miss the bullseye but always manage to get the dart in a specific spot)
Accuracy
How accurate some measurements are to the correct value (ex. you throw some darts and manage to get them all near the bullseye but not in a specific spot)
Scientific method
The process of establishing facts through testing and experimentation.
Control
The variable in the experiment that serves as the standard of comparison (ex. if you’re doing an experiment with plants and water you want to use water as a standard of measurement in the experiment)
Constant
The factors that do not change in an experiment (ex. with an experiment with plants, you want to use the same kind of plant for the experiment)
Predict
An educated guess about what will happen next
Infer
Using context clues and experiences to help people understand a certain concept
Independent variable
The variable in the equation that gets changed
Dependent variable
The variable that gets affected by the independent variable
Manipulated variable
The variable that gets manipulated / independent variable
Responding variable
The variable that changes as a result of manipulated variable / dependent variable
Sample size
the number of observations or individuals included in a study or experiment
Validity
How valid the experiment is
Trends in data
describes the general change in a variable with time
Correlation
2 or more variables are related in some way
Variability
lack of consistency or fixed pattern
Mass
total amount of matter in an object
Volume
the amount of space an object / liquid occupies / enclosed in a container
Weight
the force of gravity on an object
Percent
a relative value indicating hundredth parts of any quantity
Rate
A specific kind of ratio, in which 2 measurements are related to each other
Ratio
A comparison in terms of a quotient of two numbers a and b, usually written as ab or a/b.
Line graph
A graph that uses lines to connect individual data points
Bar graph
A graph that uses bars in each column represents data
Pie graph
type of graph that represents data in a circular graph
Scatter plot
Uses dots to represent values for two different numeric variables
Claim
a generalization based on a reported statistically significant effect
Evidence
supports the reasoning and claims
Reason
Critical thinking to support the claim by using reasoning
Theory
An explanation of both the natural world and universe that can be repeatedly tested using the scientific method
Bias
Opinionated and favoritism
