Q

what is the role of sensory memory?

A

retains all visual + auditory stimuli from the environment but only for a few seconds

Q

give three facts about the STM

A
  • only selected images + sounds are encoded into STM
  • only holds a limited amount of info for a short time
  • can also process data, to a limited extent, as well as store it

Q

what 4 things can happen to the info in the STM ?

A
  • processed
  • transferred to LTM
  • lost by displacement
  • lost by decay (fades away if not accessed)

Q

describe the serial position effect?

A
  • recall is best for items shown at the end of the test, followed by items shown at the start
  • items shown in the middle of the test are poorly remembered
  • this is due the items at the beginning of the test being transferred into the LTM by rehearsal, + items at the end are still held in the STM
  • those in the middle have been lost from STM by displacement and decay

Q

describe the memorising technique

A
  • repeating info over and over again in order to memorise
  • this keeps info in the STM longer
  • helps to transfer info from STM into LTM

14
Q

define encoding?

A
  • the conversion of one or more nerve impulses into a form that can be received + held by the brain + retrieved later from the STM/LTM
  • when items are organised into categories such as personal facts + useful skills
  • then are then stored for a long time, perhaps permanently

16
Q

describe the technique organisation

A

info that is organised into local categories is more easily encoded and transferred from the STM to LTM

17
Q

describe the elaboration of meaning technique

A

analysing the meaning of the item to be memorised + taking notes of the features + properties

18
Q

what is shallow encoding?

A

info encoded by rehearsal

19
Q

what is deeper encoding?

A

info encoded by associating with other info such as a meaning/linking it with previous memories e.g. elaboration

20
Q

how are items retrieved from the LTM?

A
  • a search is required to do so

- the search is aided by contextual cues (a reminder)

21
Q

what is the role of contextual cues?

A
  • a reminder related to the time + place when the info was initially encoded into LTM
  • enables the experience to be retrieved + recalled
