Unit 3 KA1 - Divisions Of The Nervous System And Neural Pathways Flashcards
what makes up the nervous system?
Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
What makes up the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system
Autonomic and somatic nervous system
peripheral nerves
Contain sensory pathway made of sensory nerves and motor pathway made of motor nerves
Sensory pathways
Take nerve impulses from receptors e.g skin thermoreceptors to the CNS
Brain
Analyses the info and sends nerve impulses along motor pathways to effectors which then bring about a response
Effectors
Muscles/glands
What makes up the somatic nervous system?
Sensory and motor neurons which control the voluntary movement of skeletal muscles
role of SNS
brings about some involuntary actions but majority are under voluntary control
what makes up the autonomic nervous system?
sympathetic and parasympathetic systems
role of ANS
regulates the internal environment by controlling structures and organs
involuntary control because it works automatically
role of parasympathetic and sympathetic systems
Antagonistic: they affect many of the same structures but in opposite ways to maintain a stable internal environment
role of sympathetic system in flight or fight
Arouses the body in preparation for action and expenditure of energy
- heart rate and blood pressure increases
- nervous perspiration increases
- adrenaline production stimulated
role of parasympathetic system in flight or fight
Takes over briefly to calm you down
- heart rate and blood pressure drop
- rate of peristaltic contractions increases
- blood redirected back to intenstines
