Unit 3 - KA1 Ecosystems Flashcards
What is a niche?
The role an organism has within its community such as the resources it requires, interactions with other organisms and conditions it can tolerate
What is a habitat?
The place in which an organism lives
What is grazing?
A method of feeding on plants, such as grass, by herbivores
What is population?
All the members of one species living in an ecosystem
What is biodiversity?
The variety of (number of different) animal and plant species in an ecosystem
What is predatation?
The obtaining of food by hunting and killing other animals
What is prey?
Animals which are hunted and killed by predictors
What is an ecosystem?
All the organisms living in a particular habitat and the non-living components with which the organisms interact
What is a carnivore?
A consumer that eats other animals
What is competition?
The interaction between organisms when they require resources that are in short supply
What is a herbivore?
A consumer that eats plants
What is a food chain?
A diagram that shows a simple feeding relationship
What is a food web?
A diagram which shows all the feeding relationships in an ecosystem
What is inter specific competition?
Competition between organisms from two different species for one or a few of the resources they resources they require
What is intra specific competition?
Competition between organisms of the same species for all resources they require
What is a producer?
A green plant that makes its own food through photosynthesis
What is a consumer?
An organism which gains its food by eating other organisms
What is an omnivore?
A type of consumer that eats plants and animals.
What is a species?
Organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile off spring
What is a community?
All the organisms living in a particular
What type of competition is more intense?
Intraspecific competition is usually more intense than interspecific competition because the individuals have the same niche so are competing for exactly the same resources
