Unit 2 - KA5 Transport systems in plants Flashcards
What are plant organs?
Roots, stems and leaves
What are root hair cells?
Water is absorbed by root hair cells. These cells increase the surface area for the absorption of water from the surrounding soil.
Process of water absorption
Water moves into the root hair cells by osmosis, water then moves from cell to cell through the root cells, water moves up through the xylem vessels through the stem of the plant and up towards the leaves.
Factors affecting transpiration rate
Surface area, temperature, humidity and wind speed
What is transpiration rate increased by?
Increase in temperature, increase in wind speed and increase in surface area of the leaves
What is transpiration rate decreased by?
Increase in humidity and decrease in surface area of the leaves
What is transpiration?
The process of water loss from the leaves of a plant (evaporation through the stomata)
What system is in charge of transpiration in plants?
Phloem system
What system is in charge of transporting water in plants?
Xylem system
