Unit 2 - KA7 Absorption of materials Flashcards
What are the two main exchange organs in the body?
The lungs and the small intestine
Describe villi structure
Small finger like projections that line the inner wall of the small intestine
What products does villi absorb?
Glucose, amino acids, fatty acids and glycerol
What is the function of large surface area in villi?
Allows fast absorption of the products in digestion
What is the function of thin walls in villi?
The wall is only 1 cell thick allowing easy absorption of the products of digestion
What is the function of extensive blood supply in villi?
Capillary networks run through the villi allowing products of carbohydrate and protein digestion to easily move into the blood stream
What is the function of a large surface area in alveoli?
A large volume of oxygen can be absorbed into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide can move out
What is the function of thin walls in alveoli?
Gases can rapidly diffuse across the alveolar membrane
What is the function of extensive blood supply in alveoli?
Capillary networks are in close contact with the alveoli allowing gases to easily move into and out of the blood stream
