What are some characteristics of parables?
Based on Everyday Life:
-Grew out of the land, culture and family life of his people.
Filled with Surprises:
-Jesus would take a common occurrence and add a surprising twist to it.
-Used to keep his listeners alert or catch them off-guard.
What happened in the parable “The Wicked Tenants”? What is the message? (Luke 20:9-19, Matt 21:33-46, Mark 12:1-12)
A man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants. He sent a slave to collect his share of the produce, but the tenants beat him and he returned with nothing. He sent another, and another, and the same thing kept happening. He then sent his son, thinking he would be respected, but instead they killed him. The land lord will then come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. This is meant to be a parallel to God sending prophets to the earth, only to be rejected or killed. He then sent his son, who was later killed.
What are some questions we should ask ourselves before making difficult decisions?
1-Could it hurt anyone? 2-Is it fair? 3-Does it violate the golden rule? 4-What would adults I respect say? 5-What does my conscience say?
Who is Jean Vanier?
Jean Vanier was a humanitarian who founded L’Arche in 1964.
What is L’Arche?
L’Arche is French for “The Ark” - as in Noah’s Arks. It represents deliverance and God’s covenant with humanity. Today it has grown to over 120 communities in 30 countries.
What is the short message of “The Wicked Tenants”?
Beware of false prophets, only Jesus is the true way of the light.
What are the five principles of humanity?
1-All humans are sacred.
2-Our world and lives are in the process of evolving.
3-Maturity comes through working with others, dialogue and a sense of belonging.
4-Humans need to be encouraged to make choices and to be responsible for our own lives.
5-To make choices, we need to seek truth and meaning.
