Unit 3 food production Flashcards
An increase in human population need
An increase in food yeild
Fertilsers
Chemicals added to soil to improve plant growth
Pesticide
Chemicals that kill plants nad animals which reduce crop yeild
What do fertilisers don’t
Fertilisers provide chemicals such as nitrates
Nitrates are used to produce amino acids which are sythesized into plant proteins
Why do plants need amino acids from plants and animals
Protein synthesis
Problems with fertilises
Fertilisers leach into fresh water adding extras, unwanted nitrates
This causes algal blooms
Algal blooms reduce light levels, killing aquatic plants and animals
The deed plants become food for bacteria, which increase in poulation reducing oxegen for other animals
Probelmwith pesticides
Pesticides sprayed onto crops can accumulate in the bodies of organisms over time
As they are passes along a food chain, toxicity increases and can reach lethal levels
Bioaccumulation
The build up of toxic substances in a living organism
