Unit 3 : Ecosystems Flashcards
What is a species?
A species is a group of similar organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity means the total variation amongst all living things on the earth
What is a population?
A group of organisms of the same species
eg. A pack of wolves.
What is a producer?
Green plants that make their own food using photosynthesis, converting light energy into chemical energy.
They are always the first organisms in a food chain.
What is a herbivore?
A consumer that only eats plants.
What is an omnivore?
A consumer that eats plants and animals.
What is a carnivore?
A consumer that only eats animals.
What’s a predator?
An animal that prays on other animals.
What is pray?
A animal that is being hunted/prayed on by another animal.
What is food chain?
A relationship where one type of organism feeds on the previous one and in turn provides food and energy for the next one.
What is a food web?
Interconnecting food chains.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem consists of all the organisms (the community) living in a particular habitat and the non-living components with which the organisms interact.
What is a niche?
A niche is the role that an organism plays within a community. It relates to the recourses it requires in its ecosystem, such as light and nutrient availability and it’s interactions with other organisms in the community. It involves competition and predation and the conditions it can tolerate such as temperature.
What is competition?
Completion in ecosystems occurs when resources are in short supply.
What is intErspecific competition?
It occurs amongst individuals of different species for one or a few of the resources that they require.
