Unit 2 Abosrtion Of Materials Flashcards
What is absorbed into the bloodstream?
Oxygen and nutrients from food must be absorbed into the bloodstream to be delivered to cells for respiration.
What must be removed form cells into the bloodstream?
Waste materials, such as carbon dioxide ,use be removed form cells into the he bloodstream.
Where are capillaries contained and why?
Tissues contain capillary networks to allow the exchange of materials at cellular level.
What increases the efficiency of absorption ?
Large surface area
Thin walls
Extensive blood supply
What are lungs for?
Gas exchange
How do the lungs increase their surface area?
They consist of a large number of alveoli.
How does oxygen get into blood and co2 out?
O and CO2 are absorbed through the thin alveolar walls to or from the meany blood capillaries.
How are nutrients absorbed?
They are absorbed into the villi in the small intestine.
How does the small intestine increase its surface area?
The large number of thin walled villi which provides a large surface area.
How do villi work?
Each villus contains a network of capillaries to absorb glucose and amino acids and a lacteal to absorb fatty acids and glycerol.
