Unit 2 : Variation And Inheritance Flashcards
What is a gene?
Genes are made up of DNA
What is an allele?
Different forms of a gene
What is a phenotype?
The phenotype of an organism is the physical appearance determined by the genotype for the characteristic.
What is a genotype?
The genotype of an organism is the alleles it carries for a particular characteristic.
What does a dominant allele mean?
I’d present, will always show up in the appearance of n organism.
What does a recessive allele mean?
Will only show up in the appearance of an organism if it has inherited two of this allele.
Homozygous?
Two identical alleles
Heterozygous ?
One of each type of allele.
P? F1? F2?
P = parent
F1 = first gen
F2 = second gen
Why are predicted phenotype rations among offspring not not always achieved?
Because it’s completely random what sperm fuses which each egg. It’s a completely random process.
What is polygenic inheritance?
A characteristic showing continuous variation and is determined by more than one gene.
