Unit 3 : Controlling the rate - COLLISION THEORY Flashcards
What is the negative impact on industry if reaction rate is too slow?
If the rate is too slow the process will not be economically viable.
What is the negative impact to industry if the reaction rate is too high.
If the rate is too high the process will have a risk of explosion
What is the relationship between time and reaction rate?
rate = 1/time
What effect does concentration have on reaction rate?
If the concentration of the reactants is increased, there are more reactant particles moving together. There will be more collisons and so the reaction rate is increased. The higher the concentration of reactants, the faster the rate of reaction will be.
What effect does particle size have on the reaction rate
By decreasing the particle size of a reactant, we are increasing its surface area. A smaller particle size of reactants provides a greater surface area that collsions can take place on. The greater the surface area, the faster the rate of reaction
What effect does temperature have on the reaction rate
If the temperature is increased, the particles have more energy and so move more quickly. Increasing the temperature increases the rate of reaction becuase the particles collide more often.
What effect does pressure have on the reaction rate.
If the pressure of gaseos reactants is increased, there are more reactant particles for a given volume. There will be more collisions and so the reaction rate is increased. The higher the pressure of reactants, the faster the rate of reaction will be.
For a chemical reaction to occur which two requirments are necessary?
The particles must collide each other with sufficient energy
The particles must collide each other with the correct angle of orientation.
