Q

Advantages to asexual reproduction (3)

A
  1. Usually rapid
    - E. coli (20 minutes)
    - generation time is short
  2. Little/No specialization for reproduction
    - saves energy
  3. Preserves genetics
    - produce a clone of the parent
    - beneficial if the environment is stable

Q

What are the ways and examples that asexual organisms reproduce?
(4)

A
  1. Fission
    - organism divides in half
    - parent is not retained
    = paramecium fission
  2. Budding
    - small offshoot offspring
    - parent is retained
    = Hydra Budding
  3. Fragmentation
    - a portion is used to reproduce
    = algae, cacti, starfish
  4. Vegetative Propagation
    - common in plants = strawberry runners

Q

Advantages to sexual reproduction (2)

A
  1. Provides variation
    - may be beneficial if the environment is changing
