10
Q

Potential energy

A

Energy stored; not currently causing change - changes into kinetic energy when released.
= food, wood, fuels, dam when closed.

Q

Kinetic energy

A

energy in action; causing change - some is used to make more potential energy
= metabolizing food, combusting wood / fuel, open dam

Q

Entropy

A

measure of disorder or randomness - total entropy in a closed system always increases - predicts a heat death of the universe

16
Q

Living organisms and the second law

A

fertilization (zygote), development, birth - constantly combatting entropy by harvesting energy from environment
= eating food

17
Q

Types of reactions

A

Exergonic

Endergonic

18
Q

Exergonic reactions

A

higher energy reactants and lower energy products - neg. delta G (change in free energy) - may occur spontaneously - release energy into surroundings
= hydrolysis is exergonic

19
Q

Endergonic reactions

A

lower energy reactants and higher products - pos. delta G (requires energy) = condensation is endergonic.

20
Q

Define activation energy

A

energy needed to initiate a reaction - changes potential into kinetic - activation energy “hump”

21
Q

Biological importance of activation energy

A

organic polymers ( proteins, phospholipids, glycolipids, glycoproteins, starch and glycogen) - have high activation energies - keeps polymers polymers

22
Q

Role of catalysts

A

increase reaction rates - not chemically changed nor consumed in the reaction - lower activation energy.

23
Q

Types of catalysts

A

Inorganic - often used in industry

Organic - enzymes in organisms
