Unit 3: Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is a nucleus?
A positively charged region in the center of an atom.
What are protons?
Positively charged subatomic particles in the nucleus.
What are neutrons?
Neutral charged subatomic particles in the nucleus.
What are electrons?
Negatively charged subatomic particles around the nucleus.
What is the force that holds the nucleus together called?
Strong nuclear force
Why do electrons orbit the nucleus?
Because opposite charges attract.
What determines the atomic number of an element?
It’s protons.
What is an isotope?
An element with a differing number of neutrons.
What is atomic mass?
The number of protons and neutrons in an atom’s nucleus.
What are nucleons?
Protons and neutrons.
What is an ion?
An atom with a charge.
