Unit 2: Chemical and Physical Properties and Density Flashcards
What is a physical property?
Any characteristic of a material that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the substances of the material.
What are examples of physical properties?
Color Shape Texture Viscosity Conductivity Melting point Hardness Boiling Point Density Malleability
What is malleability?
A solid material’s ability to be shaped or hammered without shattering.
What are chemical properities?
Any ability to produce a change in the composition of matter. Can only be observed when the substances in a sample are changing into different substances.
What are examples of chemical properties?
Flammability
Reactivity
Toxicity
Acidity
What is a redox reaction?
Reduction: when atoms or molecules gain electrons
Oxidation: other atoms or molecules lose electrons
What is an anode?
An element that easily gives up electrons.
What is a cathode?
An element that easily accepts electrons.
What is density?
physical property that defines how closely packed particles are.
What is mass?
Amount of matter?
What is volume
The space something takes up
How do you find density?
Density = Mass/volume
What is buoyant force?
The upward force on an object in a fluid exerted by the surrounding fluid.
What does the Archimedes’ Principle state?
The buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid the object displaces.
What is negative buoyancy?
The weight of the object is greater than the buoyant force and it sinks.
