First Amendment
Guarantees the right to the freedoms of speech, press, and religion. Protects the right to petition the government.
Second Amendment
Guarantees the people’s right to own and bear arms for their defense.
Third Amendment
Citizens cannot be forced to quarter soldiers
Fourth Amendment
No unreasonable search and arrest—need a search warrant and probable cause.
Fifth Amendment
Allows citizens to refuse to answer questions during a criminal trial to avoid accidentally confessing to the crime. (Right to remain silent)
Sixth Amendment
Guarantees fair and speedy public trial
Seventh Amendment
The right to a jury trial in civil lawsuits
Eigth Amendment
Prohibits cruel and unusual punishments and excessive bail
Ninth Amendment
The people get rights even if they are not listed in the Constitution
Tenth Amendment
States and the people have powers not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution.
Eleventh Amendment
Individuals cannot sue a state in federal court
Twelfth Amendment
Separate ballots for President and Vice-President
Thirteenth Amendment
Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.
Fourteenth Amendment
Grants equal protection under the Constitution and citizens’ priviledges.
Fifteenth Amendment
Guaranteed that the right to vote would not be based upon race or color.
