(3) May get corrupted.

34
Q

What is the functionality of optical storage media?

A

Single spiral track running from the inside to the outside of the disk. Digital data is stored by etching pits onto the surface of the disk with a laser. The place without pits is known as land, the reflection of land and pits from a laser allows data to be read by reflecting it back to a detector.

35
Q

What are the variations of optical media devices?

A

(1) CDs (Compact devices): 700 MB.
(2) DVDs (Digital versatile disks): 4.7 GB.
(3) Blu-ray disks: 128 GB.

36
Q

What are the types of optical storage media?

A

(1) Read only memory (ROM) [CD-ROM, DVD-ROM].
(2) Recordable (R) [CD-R, DVD-R].
(3) Re-writable (RW) [CD-RW, DVD-RW].

37
Q

How does (ROM) [CD-ROM, DVD-ROM] work as an optical storage media?

A

Can only be read from.

38
Q

How does (R) [CD-R, DVD-R] work as an optical storage media?

A

Can only be written once and can be read.

39
Q

How does (RW) [CD-RW, DVD-RW] work as an optical storage media?

A

Can be read and can be written to multiple times.

40
Q

(2) They can access the data randomly without searching through everything.
(3) Low cost.

46
Q

What are the disadvantages of hard disk drive?

A

(1) Physical impact may lead the read/write heads to corrupt data.
(2) Slower to read data than solid state drive.
(3) Noisy.

47
Q

Explain the functionality of fixed hard disk drive.

A

They are permanently connected to the computer and contained within the case of the computer.

48

51
Q

Explain the functionality of magnetic tape drives.

A

In a magnetic tape drive, the read/write head stays still and the tape holding the data moves past it. Navigation through the tape can be time consuming thus, it is only used where there is a need to store large amounts of data but speed of access is not important.

54
Q

Explain the functionality of CD-RWs and DVD-RWs.

A

There is a layer of metallic allow that switches between being reflective or non-reflective depending on the writing of the data, this allows data to be written multiple times and allows data to be moved from one computer to another.

55
