Unit 3 Flashcards
What does the CNS consist of?
Brain and spinal cord
What does the spinal cord do?
transmits sensory information along sensory neurons from the PNS to the brain
transmits information from the brain to the PNS, activating motor neurons
What does the PNS do?
Links the CNS to other parts of the body
What are the divisions of the PNS?
Somatic NS, Autonomic NS
What does the Somatic NS do?
Transports messages between sense organs and the spinal cord
Controls voluntary bodily movement via connections with the skeletal muscles
- Involves sensory (afferent) and motor (efferent neurons) SAME
What is the process of the spinal reflex?
Pain receptors are stimulated
triggering sensory neurons to communicate with the spinal cord
Passes through interneuron in SC to motor neuron
to flex muscles to remove from object
Message also goes to the brain to register painful sensation
What does the Autonomic NS do?
Controls involuntary bodily activities (digestion, heart rate)
What is the Autonomic NS divided into?
Symphatetic NS, Parasympathetic NS
What does the Sympathetic NS do?
initiates some responses and inhibits others to mobilise or immobilise the body as part of the fight-flight-freeze when threatened
What does the parasympathetic NS do?
conserves bodily functions by restoring the body to homeostasis
