What is oligarchies?
Form of government which political power rests with a small elite segment of society
-often politically powerful families who pass it down
What is a one party state?
Only one party forms the govt and no other parties can run candidates for elections
What is a military dictatorship?
Form of government which political power resides with the military leadership
How do military dictatorships often come about?
Through a coup d’état (which the existing govt or overthrown by military personnel)
What are absolute monarchies?
Ultimate authority to run a state was in the hands of a king who rules by divine rights of king
What is divine rights of king?
Claim that a king was given his position by a higher power
What is totalitarianism?
A form of government that seeks complete control over the public and private lives of its citizens
How does totalitarianism attempt to control?
-creating a hierarchical organized society
-single political party run by a leader or small elite
What are some characteristics of totalitarianism?
-Single-party rule
-full control of society
-no opposition
-censorship
-propaganda
-indoctrination
-terror
What is the difference between totalitarian and authoritarian?
Totalitarian takes compete control over citizens whilst authoritarianism allows for some individual freedoms (personal lives)
What is Illiberalism?
when a government rejects liberal values like individual rights, free speech, and fair elections, even if it keeps some democratic appearances
What is a vision?
Vision of what a country could be if led by a a leader who could secure that vision
What is propaganda?
Exagération and misinterpretation of info to really ripping for a cause or an issue
What is controlled participation?
Controlling of individual behaviour
to give the impression of free will ( rigged elections )
What is public discontent
Scapegoating, person or group made to bear the blame for others to suffer in their place
What is terror?
Acts of terror which state conducts against another state, or against its own citizens
What is pageantry and ceremony?
Use of symbols, ceremony and pageantry to evoke emotion and pride to be part of the nation
What is meritocracy?
Being rewarded for performance, credentials etc…
Who is Thomas Hobbes
-Believed people are selfish; need strong ruler to maintain order. Supported absolute monarchy; wrote Leviathan.
-Far right, order over freedom.
Who is Tommy Douglas?
Was the Premier of Saskatchewan and Leader of the NDP, known as the “Father of Medicare” for introducing universal healthcare in Canada, and he was a left-wing social democrat.
What is the French Revolution?
-major uprising where the French people overthrew the monarchy, demanded equality and rights, and drastically changed the country’s political and social structure.
What is a reform utopian/socialist?
gradually improving society through peaceful, democratic changes rather than violent revolution, aiming to create a more equal and fair system
What does it mean to reform?
make changes to something—usually a system, law, or institution—in order to improve it, fix problems, or make it fairer or more effective.
