Unit 2.3 Metabolic Rate Flashcards
What is metabolic rate?
The energy consumed by an organism over time.
What is the basal metabolic rate (BMR)?
The metabolic rate of an organism at rest.
What factors affect metabolic rate?
Oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, and heat production.
What does a respirometer measure?
Oxygen usage.
What does an oxygen probe monitor?
Oxygen levels.
What does a carbon dioxide probe track?
CO2 production.
What does a calorimeter measure?
Heat production.
What is the structure of a complete double circulatory system?
Two atria and two ventricles.
What are the advantages of a complete double circulatory system?
No mixing of oxygenated/deoxygenated blood, higher pressure, efficient oxygen delivery.
What is the structure of an incomplete double circulatory system?
Two atria and one ventricle.
What is a disadvantage of an incomplete double circulatory system?
Mixing of blood reduces efficiency.
What is the structure of a single circulatory system?
One atrium and one ventricle.
What is a disadvantage of a single circulatory system?
Lower oxygen delivery efficiency.
How do metabolic rates compare among birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish?
Birds & mammals have a high metabolic rate, reptiles & amphibians have a moderate metabolic rate, and fish have the lowest metabolic rate.
What do animals with higher metabolic rates require?
More oxygen delivery.
