A state of immobility just before falling asleep or upon awakening.
An overlap between REM sleep and wakefulness
Hypnagogic Hallucinations
Brief vivid sensory phenomena (falling, etc) when trying to sleep
Sleep Spindles
Short bursts of brain activity Stage 2 NREM
K- Complex
Single large spike of brain activity
REM rebound
A person deprived of REM sleep will increase their time spent in REM sleep the next night
One sleep cycle
90 - 120 minutes long
Why do we sleep?
Memory consolidation and restoration
Brain shrinks to allow cerebral fluid to flush out any toxins and clean it
short term to long term memory
