Unit 2- Senses Flashcards
Sensation
The process of detecting a physical stimulus
Rods
Periphery vision; sees black and white and grey
Cones
Center of the eye (Fovea); sees color
Blind Spot
The region with no rods or cones
Prosopagnosia
Facial Blindness
Pupil
A hole in the eye that lets light in
Iris
The muscle that controls how much light is let through the pupil
Lens
Focuses light
Retina
Back lining of the eye– contains rods and cones
Optic Nerve
Transmits information to the visual cortex in the brain
Cornea
Clear protective covering over the eye
Trichromatic Theory of Color Vision
Three different types of photoreceptors. Each sensitive to different range of wavelengths
Opponent Process Theory
Two types of color opponent cells
Localization
Being able to detect where sound is coming from
Amplitude
Intensity of a wave
Frequency Theory
Basilar membrane vibrates at the same frequency as sound waves
Place Theory
Different frequencies cause larger vibrations at different locations along the basilar membrane
Olfactory Bulb
Where smell is registered in the front of the brain
Olfactory System
Connects to the Limbic System and Temporal Lobe
Anosmia
Lack of smell
Touch
Pressure, itch, temperature, pain
Taste (gustation)
Sweet, sour, bitter, salty, umami
Nociceptors
Free nerve endings that respond to pain through spinal cord to brain.
Gate Control Theory
Pain is physiological and psychological
Kinesthetic
Knowing where your body parts are in relation to one another
Vestibular
Sense of balance
Synesthesia
Senses join together
Proprioceptors
Receptors in muscles and joints that provide information about position and movement
