UNIT 2 sensation and perception Flashcards
what is sensation
the processing of information from our environment through the 5senses. info is sent to the brain in raw form where the brain processes and perception begins.
what is perception
the way we interpret our sensations and makes us aware of everything around us
absolute threshold
the minimum amount of stimulus energy required for perception to occur
stages of sensation and perception
reception, transmission, transduction, selection, organisation, interpretation
what is reception
stimulus collected by sense organ
transmission
receptor cells send messages to the brain and sensory cortex for perception to begin
transduction
stimulus energy converted by receptor cells into electro chemical nerve impulses
selection
only paying attention to specific stimuli
organisation
reorganisation of information in the brain
interpretation
past experiences etc put into context and involved in the process of giving stimulus meaning.
raw form for 5 senses
touch -mechanical sight - light smell - chemical (olfcation) sound - vibrations taste - chemical (gustation)
